Tuesday 17th June

Today, we said goodbye to Andrew and also thanked Nick and Celia for having us stay overnight outside their lovely home in Toowoomba. Our destination today was Roma.

We drove through the lovely city of Toowoomba, which looks quite green even though they have little rain. This was apparent as we drove across the Darling Downs.

We had to have a coffee stop in Dalby which appears to be a lovely rural town but there are numerous shops in the main street that are empty. Maybe a sign of the hard drought years that have crippled so may country towns.

We drove past the Army School of Aviation at Oakey which appeared to be quite sedate. Not too far down the Warrego Highway, we spotted a Tiger helicopter hovering near the side of the road apparently do some special manoeuvre. Unfortunately, we were unable to stop due to quite a bit of traffic right behind us.

Our lunch stop was in the small but very tidy town of Miles. Just lunch at a bakery but it was very nice. We stopped at several smaller villages along the way and visited their displays of not only history but local homemade wares. All the small villages look so cared for and really tidy.

By midafternoon we arrived in Roma. After setting up the Karavan, we decided to go for a short bike ride along the river and to the Big Rig Park. As we arrived back, we discovered the old “rocker” Jade Hurley "AUSTRALIA'S KING OF COUNTRY ROCK" had parked his motor home right beside our Karavan. As yet we have not met him but will try in the morning.

BBQ dinner tonight with two nice couples from Melbourne. Another glass of red or 3 in nice company around the BBQ.
