Wednesday 18th June

We left Roma after our Karavan had created a bit of interest with fellow travellers. Most had never even seen a Kimberley Karavan before. Unfortunately, we did not see Jade Hurley again as he was not around when we left.

After we travelled for about an hour, we reached the little tidy town of Mitchell which is considered to be the gateway to Outback Queensland. We were aware that there is an artesian spa there. Prue had a soak there while I checked the tyres and wheel nuts on the Bravo and Karavan. While Prue was soaking I had a nice Merlot coffee in the complex kiosk.

Moving on, we drove on to another nice little town of Morven where we checked out the local information centre and learnt a little more about the area. Sadly, like a lot of areas, the population has dropped especially as rural pursuits changed and rail services have ceased. These have been replaced by road trains and B triples, similar to what goes on the Pacific Highway but with another trailer. They seem to travel really well and up to more speed than I am travelling. They are mostly cattle carriers but also much general freight. Some photos soon of the big rigs.

The farm land is a variety of types from open rolling downs to more heavily timbered with low scrub to some that has been cleared for grazing. Closer to Roma there were many planted grain crops and some still being planted as well as some sorghum crops waiting to be harvested. Most likely, the sorghum is waiting for a frost to dry it out.

Our overnight stop was in Augathella. It is on the banks of the Warrego River. We stayed in the free camp fisherman’s rest over the river from the town. It even had town water and lawn at our door. We had several sprinkles of rain, almost count the drops, for a change. No useful rain out here.

The town had murals on many buildings and one photo is self explanatory.

One thing we are finding is that all the towns are so inviting as they really care for their appearance and obviously appeal to us tourists.
