21st August 2008

No photos today!

Today, I celebrated my birthday, very quietly.

Prue went for a walk on Cable Beach and then had coffee at some cafe.

I went for a 30 km ride around Broome. It was fairly quiet as it was between 0710 and 0815. With just the workers going to work. Some are riding low powered motor scooters which are smart as the terrain is really flat.

During the day, I had a few calls from either Andrew, Malcolm or a couple of friends. I had emails or text messages from friends in Lithuania, Holland, South Africa and more local. Nice to hear from them all.

We drove into Broome CBD and did a little shopping. I particularly needed some chain lubricant for my bike. With all the red Kimberley dust over everything the lubricant may stop a little wear. The red dust seems to penetrate everything and tends to stain as well. Socks are a very noticeable recipient of the red colour.

We returned to the Karavan and had lunch. After lunch it was time to have a ‘nanna nap’ brought on by reading a book Prue gave me. Very easy to relax after lunch!

Early evening, we drove into Broome and joined our Tasmanian friends, Wes and Vicki. We went to the Broome Open Air Cinema to watch the most enjoyable “Mama Mia” starring Meryl Streep and Pearce Brosnan. It was so much fun tapping along with the music of ABBA.

We had dinner in the Cinema just before the main feature. It is well set up and is an historic location. If you read the hyperlink it is more descriptive.

One special feature of the Cinema is that, at almost choreographed timing, aircraft from both Qantas and Virgin airlines departed Runway 10 of Broome Airport. Where we were sitting the aircraft appeared almost over the centre of the cinema screen. It was an eerie sight the first time but quite funny the second time. As the takeoffs must be into the wind this is the prevailing direction.

After the fun movie, we went to a nearby cafe for coffee and cake. Just as well we have not been indulging in unnecessary food for a while! A great way to end one’s birthday.
